SO DO I NEED TO BE LICENSED AS A CONTRACTOR?

If you construct or alter any building, highway, road, parking facility, railroad, excavation, or other structure in California then you must be licensed by the CSLB (California State Contractors License Board) if the total cost of labor and materials is $500 or greater.

AND WHAT KIND OF PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE MUST I HAVE?

You must have at least four years of journey-level experience to qualify to take the contractors exam. Credit is given for experience as a journeyman, foreman, supervising employee, contractor, or owner-builder.

CAN I RECEIVE CREDIT FOR A PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION?

Yes! You may receive credit for relevant technical training, apprenticeship training or college education toward a portion of the required four years of practical experience.

However, at least one of those four years must be practical experience.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE THE EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS?

The "qualifying individual" for a contractor's license is required to pass the trade examination, as well as written law and business examination for the specific license they are pursuing.

The applicant must also be at least 18 years of age or older, and have the experience and skills necessary to properly manage the daily activities of a construction business, including field supervision, or he or she must be represented by a qualifying individual with the necessary experience and skills. Other requirements may apply.
